All the way over here in Los Angeles I'm hearing that Bernice Bowen recieved a 20-something year sentence today while the deceased officers' wives cheered in court.
These women should have been home with their ministers or priests praying for Bernice. I know what her apartment looked like that day and I would have been certain they were not going to drive a gunslinger like him downtown with his hands cuffed in front and no plexiglas shield. I am sure she was certain of it, too. She hoped he'd get away and come back and find her later to help her put together the pieces. By get away I mean vanish. She could not have anticipated  that they would smile at the numchucks and bows and weapons all over the apartment as they drove him off casually restrained. She hoped for what almost happened--that he'd hide in a yard and not be discovered.Up until that day, our studio was a good refuge, but we'd just put a fence around it the day before.
Bernice got the kind of
sentence someone would get who participated in a big whole plan, like the SLA, to actually kill officers that day.Everything that happened to her caught her by surprise. She didn't knock on the Childer's door, than stab to death the officer when he answered. She wasn't after him, and then caught afterwards. But that is how his widow sees her. Has the widow ever thought about her husband seeing all the signs of  a gun freek and then not trusting an instinct he should have had? Can she bear to fault her husband a little bit for his demise? Does Bernice's excessive sentence allow her  relief that her spouse must not have been at all stupid, the proof that she must have to live with this situation without kind of  blaming him some for being so dumb?
